What is CANapalooza?
CANapalooza is an exciting 3-day experience during Homecoming to support the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. You can be a part of it by donating canned food or money, or you can form a group to register to participate in building creative canned food structures each night at the Parade Ground. After display the next day, the cans will be donated to the Food Bank. Each night of CANapalooza will include entertainment and refreshments.

Why should you participate?
The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank has experienced large financial cutbacks making it difficult to supply enough food to people and families in need. (You can help assist the Food Bank with food and monetary donations.) As we celebrate the 100th year of Homecoming this year, we encourage you to share the spirit of LSU and its Commitment to Community by coming together as an LSU family to collect the most cans in our history. You can be a part of this great service to our community!

Rules, Guidelines & Tips for participating in a Structure Build
Faculty, staff, and student groups must register to participate. Each group collects cans for its own structure. We encourage groups to start collecting cans ahead of time to make sure that they have enough. You will be assigned a night and a time to build at the Parade Ground between 6pm and 9pm. You may request a particular night on the attached registration sheet, but slots will be filled first-come, first-served. Eight to nine groups will build each night. The structures will be on view to all of LSU until 3pm the next day. The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank will then pick up the cans from the previous night. You must submit a rough sketch of your structure for approval. Structures should represent the spirit of LSU and 100 Years of Homecoming. We encourage you to be as creative as possible and to think about structures such as, but not limited to, the Clock Tower, Tiger Stadium, Fleur-de-lis, tiger face, and the theme of Homecoming 2009, “100 Years of Homecoming.”
There are just 2 rules:
- Closed toe shoes must be worn at all times while building structures.
- Only cans provided by your group may be used in your structure.
Guidelines and Tips:
- Collecting Cans: Partnering with another student organization will ease the load of collecting cans on your members. Find another student organization that you would like to work with and invite them to participate with you. Also, invite your family, friends, professors, colleagues, etc. to donate canned-food items to you for your can-structure. Suggested number of cans to build a structure is 400-500.
- Structure Ideas: Be as creative as possible! Structures can reflect LSU icons such as Memorial Tower, Tiger Stadium, the Union, Alex Box Stadium, Indian Mounds, etc. They can also reflect Louisiana culture such as a pot of gumbo, a Fleur de Lis, Mardi Gras mask, a tiger, a football, or crawfish. Your group can also submit designs that are reflective of your student organization. For more ideas, check out this site for more visual prompts: http://www.canstruction.org/
- Building: Slip sheets, thin pieces of cardboard, will be provided to all CANapalooza participants. These sheets can be easily placed between layers of cans to help support and stabilize structures. Use approved props or labels to help your can-structure come to life and be more recognizable.
- Reccomended Can Sizes: Collecting multiple cans of the same size is also important to help build structures. Cans of the same size are easier to stack and build. Organizations and groups who collect large, industrial sized cans will need fewer canned-food items to build large structures. Collect as many cans as possible, but be strategic and think about what you need to help your canned-food items come to life!
- Transporting Cans: All approved groups participating in CANapalooza will have one reserved parking space near the Parade Ground. CANapalooza volunteers will be on hand each night to help your group move cans from your vehicle to the building site should it be needed. Be sure to put your cans in smaller boxes or bags so that they can easily be transported and don’t get too heavy for one person to carry.
